THE TOOTH EXTRACTION OPTIONS
Simple Tooth Extraction
The first method is called a simple extraction, which is used for teeth that are visible and easily accessible. Most teeth can be removed with simple extractions, so long as they aren’t severely compromised by breakage or infection. The full procedure follows these steps: The dentist starts with a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding area. The tooth’s roots are full of nerves, so numbing them will drastically reduce pain. The patient’s mouth needs to be kept open, so a spacer, called an elevator, is used to accomplish this. It is possible to forego this step; however, it is generally better to include it to reduce fatigue and strain on the jaw. Extraction forceps are used to pull the tooth directly from the socket. Forceps like this are specially designed to get a grip on a tooth and to give the dentist plenty of leverage. This allows the dentist to remove it as gently as possible, and avoid damaging the surrounding area. After the tooth is extracted, the empty socket is cleaned thoroughly to remove any loose bone and tissue. The socket is compressed to reshape the jawbone, reduce and manage bleeding, and to close up the open space.
Surgical Tooth Extraction
The second method is known as a surgical extraction, and is employed when a tooth is in a critical condition, or difficult location. You may recognize this as the method used for wisdom teeth, but this also applies to teeth with extensive breakage, that are impacted, or just developed exceptionally long roots. Every surgical extraction is different, depending greatly on the tooth, and the patient, and so it’s difficult to give an exact procedure. A much stronger anesthetic may be used, or you may be put to sleep all together. X-rays need to be taken to determine the exact state, location, and/or orientation of the tooth, as it could be growing in the wrong direction. An oral surgeon will often be called in to perform the surgery, although it is entirely possible for a general dentist to perform it as well, depending on their level of experience.
Recovery Time and Expectations
It is important that during the healing process, you follow the specific instructions set out for you, including rinsing your mouth out with salt water to reduce swelling, eating soft foods, applying a cold compress to the outside of your mouth, and avoiding using straws or smoking. If you follow these instructions and take care of the extraction site, you should be well on your way to a full recovery in no time!

They were over an hour drive away so they were not going to be my regular dentist and I made sure they were aware of this. On the first visit, they did the whole new patient work up with exam and full x-rays and I reminded them, we're just doing a crown and they will not be my regular dentist... The entire staff were friendly and professional and they had the newest tech gadgets that made the whole treatment easy and comfortable. The second visit went perfect and I left with a new crown and got back to work on time. They did a fantastic job, in the time required and for a fair price and even though they were not going to be my regular dentist, they kind of grew on me. They're now my regular dentist.

Brittany is a joy to be around. She has a stunning smile and a wonderful laugh. Truly a beautiful young woman and a great asset to the Spring Haven Dental team. I appreciate the pleasant atmosphere and personal attention at Spring Haven. Walk in and you will be greeted with a bright smile and friendly hello from Julianna. She is happy to help with questions and goes above and beyond to get answers. The rest of the staff is also professional and everyone obviously enjoys tbeir work. I highly recommend this Odessa practice.
