Is Organic Toothpaste Better Than Traditional?

These days, there’s a focus on making just about everything we put in or on our bodies organic. From tomatoes to milk to body lotion, you are bound to be able to find a version claiming to be natural and free of toxins out there on the market. And toothpaste is no exception. In this post, we’ll tell you what you need to know when choosing your next tube of toothpaste.

What Is Organic Toothpaste?

There are a variety of natural or organic toothpastes available in stores these days, and they come with a variety of different claims. Some are made from truly organic or natural ingredients, others may be soy or gluten free. There are cruelty-free options, and there are fluoride-free options. You’ll also see brands that are green or eco-friendly. While, for the most part, and especially with reputable brands, natural toothpastes aren’t bad, they haven’t actually been shown to be any better than traditional toothpaste brands.

Why Fluoride?

A lot of the natural toothpastes available today tout a flouride-free label. This is something to watch out for. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that has been shown to be safe and effective. Fluoride keeps the tooth enamel strong and guards against decay and cavities. Most dentists will recommend that you look for toothpaste that includes fluoride.

Don’t DIY

Another trend we’ve seen in recent years, thanks in large part to the internet, is do-it-yourself toothpastes, often made with natural ingredients you already have in your pantry. Sounds harmless, but this is where we will say definitively, “stay away!” Your teeth are precious, so don’t go experimenting with concoctions containing ingredients such as charcoal, lemon juice, and baking soda, that could strip away your irreplaceable enamel.
